Common issues for UK passport holders.

UK passport holders enter Spain based on the visa-on-arrival system at the point of entry, valid for up to 90 days (soon to be subjected to the ETIAS online system) https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en.

However, you must keep track of the number of days spent within the Schengen Zone and not just in Spain because accidently overstaying can lead to fines or future entry bans. You cannot spend 90 days in Spain and then drive back to the UK through France. The journey back counts as part of your 90-day stay in the EU. You can use this Visa Calculator to make sure.

Here are some common issues that UK passport holders face when coming to Spain.

UK passport holders considering coming to Spain must ensure their passport is valid for more than six months from the date they wish to enter Spain. That equals a three-month stay plus three months before the expiry of the passport on the day you return.

More importantly, the passport must have been issued within the last ten years. If a passport was renewed before the previous expiry date, it could fall foul of this rule. Check that the expiration date is not more than ten years after you plan to return. If it is, you must renew your passport early again to ensure it was issued within the last ten years.

If not, you will probably be stopped from boarding and prevented from entering the country even though it has six months before it expires because it was renewed nine months early the last time.
