Donkey sanctuaries in Spain

Donkeys have been a part of Spanish culture for centuries, serving as work animals for farmers. However, modern machinery has sometimes led to neglect and abandonment.

Donkey sanctuaries (“El Refugio del Burrito”) like the one in Fuente de Piedra, Andalucia, just off the A92 motorway, are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and providing lifelong care for needy donkeys.

Staff and volunteers do their best to ensure every donkey brought into the sanctuary receives the care it needs. They do this by providing the donkeys with regular veterinary check-ups.

Donkey sanctuaries thrive on the dedication of volunteers and support from the community. Many sanctuaries encourage members of the public to be involved in daily activities, from feeding and grooming donkeys to helping with maintenance tasks.

For animal lovers and compassionate travellers, visiting a donkey sanctuary in Spain can be a rewarding experience. Although it is free to visit, donations are always welcomed.

Donkey sanctuaries impact far beyond the animals they rescue. By maintaining the presence of donkeys as tourist attractions, they contribute to preserving cultural heritage.
